Maven Introduction
Maven is a project management and build automation tool, mainly used for Java projects, but can also be used for other languages (such as Kotlin, Scala).
Maven solves two aspects of software construction:
- One is how software is built.
- The other is the dependencies of software.

Maven's core features include:
Project building(Compilation, testing, packaging, deployment)
Dependency management(Automatically downloads and manages third-party libraries)
Standardized project structure(Convention over configuration)
Plugin extension(Supports custom build processes)
Maven's development history
-
In 2002: Maven wasJason van Zylcreated to replace Apache Ant (Ant required manually writing build scripts, while Maven provides a standardized process).
-
In 2004: Maven 1.0 was released.
-
In 2005: Maven 2.0 introducedPOM(Project Object Model)anddependency management.。
-
In 2010: Maven 3.0 was released, optimizing performance and improving the API.
-
Now: Maven remains one of the most popular build tools in the Java ecosystem, co-dominating the market with Gradle.
Maven's main functions and advantages
| Function | Description |
|---|---|
| Dependency management | Automatically downloads and manages.jarfiles, avoiding manual dependency management. |
| Standardized build process | Providesclean、compile、test、packagestandard lifecycles, etc. |
| Project template (Archetype) | Quickly generate project structure (e.g.,maven-archetype-quickstart) |
| Multi-module support | Suitable for large projects, can be split into multiple sub-modules. |
| Plugin extension | Supports custom build tasks (e.g.,maven-compiler-pluginspecify Java version) |
Advantages:
-
Reduced configuration: Convention over configuration, reducing
build.xmlmanual configuration such as Ant. -
Automatic dependency management: Just declare dependencies, Maven automatically downloads and handles conflicts.
-
Cross-platform: Based on Java, runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS.
-
IDE integration: Eclipse, IntelliJ IDEA, and VS Code all support Maven.
Maven vs. Other Build Tools
| Tool | Features | Applicable scenarios |
|---|---|---|
| Maven | Based on XML configuration, strong dependency management, standardized build process | Traditional Java projects, need stable dependency management |
| Gradle | Based on Groovy/Kotlin DSL, build scripts are more flexible, better performance | Android, Kotlin projects, need custom build processes |
| Ant | Based on XML, manually write build steps, high flexibility | Legacy projects, need fine-grained control of the build process |
