Python IDE

This article recommends several greatPython IDE(integrated development environments). PyCharm is highly recommended. Of course, you can choose the Python IDE that suits you based on your preferences.

PyCharm

PyCharm is a Python IDE created by JetBrains.

PyCharm has commonPython IDEfeatures, such as debugging, syntax highlighting, project management, code navigation, smart suggestions, auto-completion, unit testing, version control, etc.

In addition, PyCharm also provides some great features for Django development, and it supports Google App Engine. Even cooler, PyCharm supports IronPython.

Sublime Text

Sublime Text has a beautiful user interface and powerful features, such as code thumbnails, Python plugins, code snippets, etc. You can also customize key bindings, menus, and toolbars.

Sublime Text's main features include: spell checking, bookmarks, a complete Python API, Goto functionality, instant project switching, multiple selections, multiple windows, and more.

Sublime Text is a cross-platform editor that supports operating systems such as Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, etc.

Using Sublime Text 2's plugin extension features, you can easily build a nice Python IDE. Below are a few recommended plugins (you can find more):

  • CodeIntel: Auto-completion + member/method hints (highly recommended)
  • SublimeREPL: Used to run and debug programs that require interaction (e.g., programs that use input())
  • Bracket Highlighter: Bracket matching and highlighting
  • SublimeLinter: Code pep8 format checking

Eclipse+Pydev

1. Install Eclipse

Eclipse can be found on its official websiteEclipse.organd downloaded. Usually we can choose the Eclipse version that suits us, such as Eclipse Classic. After downloading, just extract it to the directory where you want to install it.

Of course, before running Eclipse, you must confirm that the Java runtime environment is installed, i.e., you must install JRE or JDK. You can go to (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp) to find the JRE download and install it.

2. Install Pydev

After running Eclipse, select Help --> Install New Software, as shown in the figure below.

Click Add to add the Pydev installation address:http://pydev.org/updates/, as shown in the figure below.

After that, click "OK", then click the "+" for PyDev to expand the PyDev node. Wait a moment for it to fetch the relevant PyDev packages from the internet. When finished, the relevant PyDev packages will appear in the child nodes. Check them and click Next to install. As shown in the figure below.

After installation is complete, restart Eclipse.

3. Configure Pydev

After installation, you also need to configure PyDev. Select Window -> Preferences to set up PyDev. Set the Python path. From Pydev's Interpreter - Python page, select New.

A window will pop up asking you to choose the Python installation location. Select where you installed Python.

Once done, PyDev is configured and ready to use.

4. Create a Python Project:

After installing Eclipse + PyDev, we can start using it to develop projects. First, create a project by selecting File -> New -> Pydev Project.

A new window will pop up. Fill in the Project Name and the project save location, then click Next to complete the project creation.

5. Create a New Pydev Module

A project alone cannot be executed. You must then create a new Pydev Module. Select File -> New -> Pydev Module.

In the pop-up window, choose the file location and Module Name. Note that you don't need to add .py to the name; it will be added automatically. Then click Finish to complete the creation.

Enter the "hello world" code.

6. Run the Program

After writing the program, we can start running it. Find the run button in the toolbar above.

A window will then pop up asking you to choose the run method. Usually we select Python Run to start running the program.
