Linux Command Reference

The Linux uudecode command is used to restore the ASCII encoded file generated by theuuencodecommand to the original binary file.

uudecode is usually used together with uuencode. When you receive a uuencoded file, you can use uudecode to decode it back to the original file format.

Syntax

uudecode [input-file]</p>

Parameters：

• input-file: The ASCII encoded file to decode. If no file is specified,uudecodedata will be read from standard input.

Examples

Suppose you have a file encoded.txt that has been encoded with uuencode, and you want to restore it to the original binary file:

uudecode encoded.txt

After running this command, uudecode will decode encoded.txt and generate an original file whose name is the same as the name specified during encoding.

Automatically Decode Filename

uudecode automatically recognizes the filename in the encoded file and uses it to create the decoded file. For example, if encoded.txt contains the encoded example.bin file, after decoding, a file named example.bin will be automatically generated.

Decode from Standard Input

You can also use a pipe to combine uudecode with other commands to decode data from standard input. For example:

cat encoded.txt | uudecode

This approach is suitable for scenarios where you need to read encoded content from standard input and decode it.
