Definition and Usage
The rel attribute specifies the relationship between the current document and the linked document.
Differences between HTML 4.01 and HTML5
The rel attribute is a new attribute for the <area> tag in HTML5.

Attribute Values

| alternate | An alternate version of the document (e.g., print page, translation, or mirror). |
| author | Links to the author of the document. |
| bookmark | A permanent URL used for bookmarks |
| help | Links to a help document |
| license | Links to copyright information for the document. |
| next | The next document in the selection |
| nofollow | nofollow is an attribute value of an HTML tag. Its meaning is to tell search engines "do not follow the links on this page" or "do not follow this particular link. |
| noreferrer | If the user clicks the link, instructs the browser not to send the HTTP referer header. |
| prefetch | The specified target file should be cached. |
| prev | The previous document in the selection |
| search | The document links to a search tool. |
| tag | Tags (keywords) of the current document. |
