Tag Definition and Usage

The <i> tag defines a part of the text that is different from the rest, and renders this part as italic text.

The <i> tag is used to represent technical terms, idioms and proverbs from other languages, thoughts, spaceship names, and so on.

Use the <i> element when there is no other appropriate semantic element available. Other semantic elements are as follows:

Differences Between HTML 4.01 and HTML5

In HTML 4.01, the <i> tag renders text in italic. However, in HTML5 this is not necessary; style sheets can be used to format the text in the <i> element.
