Internet Explorer 10, Firefox, Opera, Chrome, and Safari support the placeholder attribute.

Note:Internet Explorer 9 and earlier versions do not support the placeholder attribute of the <textarea> tag.

Definition and Usage

The placeholder attribute specifies a short hint that describes the expected value of a text area.

The hint is displayed in the text area when it is empty, and after the field has gained and then lost focus.

Differences between HTML 4.01 and HTML5

The placeholder attribute is a new attribute in HTML5.
