What is <AppML>?

<AppML> AppML is an HTML extension framework designed for web applications:

  • The XML language defines the application's model
  • JavaScript runs on the client browser
  • PHP or ASP scripts run on the server

AppML is the Application Model Language (Application Modeling Language）。

<Appml> History

In 1999, Refsnes Data began developing AppML, an XML-based language used to define Internet applications. In September 2000, a large project for the Norwegian Handball Federation began, with the goal of converting a huge information system from the old DOS environment to the modern Internet using only AppML. This major project had just achieved great success. According to developer estimates, compared with traditional Web development, development time was shortened by up to 75%.

In mid-September 2007, AppML content achieved offline use because it supported ASP and IE.

In October 2013, AppML was announced as an open source product, compatible with all browsers in the PHP and ASP.NET versions.

AppML's original design goals in 1999:

  • AppML applications must run on a network
  • AppML applications should be platform independent
  • AppML applications must use Internet standards (HTTP, HTML, CSS, XML)
  • AppML applications must support the needs of various applications
  • AppML applications must be self-describing
  • AppML applications must be easy to develop, maintain, and modify
