We have all heard people say more than once: "You should drink at least 8 glasses of water a day."
The problem is that almost no one actually drinks that much water every day. After years of working in the programming profession, I have found that programmers, in particular, clearly do not drink enough water. Programmers need to drink more water than ordinary people. I suddenly realized this while playing chess. After an hour of continuous chess playing, I began to feel thirsty.
It seems that when my brain is working at high speed, we need more water.
How I feel when dehydrated
I usually drink a cup of coffee in the morning. Coffee has a diuretic effect—that is, it causes more urination.
When programming, I am so focused that I can't remember or feel the need to drink water.
On workdays, I sometimes drink a glass of water at lunchtime, or maybe an extra cup of coffee.
In the evening, I drink another cup after dinner.
It may seem like this is enough, but in fact, it is far from enough.
There is a water dispenser at the company, but I never use it because it requires me to get up and leave my computer desk.
Symptoms of dehydration
After years of insufficient water intake, I began to experience the following symptoms:
- The face looks tired, aged, and more wrinkled.
- Digestive function weakened; after eating hard-to-digest food, there is mild stomach pain.
- After drinking more than 2 small glasses of beer, or more than one cup of coffee, my stomach also feels uncomfortable.
After a long time, I finally realized that the root cause of these problems was dehydration. When I realized this, I decided to do an experiment and start drinking more water.
How much water should you drink a day?
This was the first question that popped into my mind. I searched online and found that I should drink at least 1.5 liters of water a day.
As an experiment, I started bringing a 1-liter water bottle to work every day.
I started forcing myself to drink more water.
Also, in the morning, I stopped drinking coffee and switched to green tea instead.
Test results
After one month, I found that I brought home half a bottle of water every day; I couldn't drink a whole bottle.
After six months, I found that I could drink more than half a bottle of water every day. I felt better and better, and my digestive function improved slightly.
I started placing a bottle of water by my bed before going to sleep; this was the turning point.
After I started drinking water before bed, I felt a significant improvement.
Today, I drank a whole bottle of water at work.
Benefits of drinking more water
- My face began to look radiant
- My digestive function improved a lot (this is also related to exercising more)
- I was in a better state and felt more energetic.
- Weight loss
