GitHub announced the top 10 most popular programming languages on its platform, with JavaScript retaining the top spot and Java ranking second.
GitHub is the world's largest open-source software development and management community, and many tech giants, including Google and Facebook, have set up camp here.
As can be seen from the chart, since GitHub's founding in 2008, Java's ranking has soared, overtaking mainstream programming languages such as PHP and Ruby along the way. Among these, the main reason Java became popular is the widespread adoption of the Android system.

Among the languages on the list, C has declined significantly, dropping from 5th place in 2008 to 9th place. As for Ruby On Rails, although it fell to 3rd place this year, it has consistently remained in the top 3, which is quite different from people's general impression. Could it be because GitHub was written using it? There are also some languages that have been pushed out of the top 10 as the Web and mobile application environments have changed, such as Perl, VimL, Shell, etc. Meanwhile, Objective-C, the iOS development language that had been steadily in the top 10, was also pushed out this year because Apple began promoting its new development language, Swift.
It is reported that this ranking was obtained by using Linguist to detect languages in public/private repositories and forked code repositories. Of course, this still cannot fully reflect the true state of programming languages on the market, but since GitHub is becoming increasingly popular among programmers and currently has more than 10 million registered users, the above chart can basically reflect the changing trends of programming languages.
It is worth mentioning that GitHub received $250 million in Series B financing last month, bringing its total financing to $350 million and its valuation to $2 billion.
